Christoffer's Adirondack Tour 2001
Paul Smith's College

Many improvements have been made to campus in the last 5 years, one being really dramatic...Joan Weill Adirondack Library.

From http://www.joanweilladklibrary.com/

"Paul Smith's College, the only private two- and four-year college located in New York State's six-million-acre Adirondack Park, is building the Joan Weill Adirondack Library, a $13 million regional digital library and information technology facility."

"This important initiative is made possible by significant leadership commitments from New York State Governor George Pataki and Senator Ronald Stafford, who have committed $3.25 million in state grants toward the library, and the College has received a private grant of $3 million from Joan Weill, a Trustee of the College, and her husband, Sandy, CEO of Citigroup."

I'm not sure what to think.... It's _there_, as in the Quad, an open area in the middle of campus, allowing dorms to overlook the water, is completely gone. The building is set up unnecessarily high. I think it'll allow the snow that accumulates around the campus can still be pushed away, yet still see the monument.  The loop around campus has been closed up, traffic is now allowed only on the periphery. I like this traffic change. Parking in front of the dorms always detracts. Using uneven cobblestones is going to be a pain to keep clear of snow, then again, getting down to the stone was never the intention of plowing in mountains, sidewalk or roadway.

In order for the campus to attract students for four years, increasing buildings is the right way to go. The current library is like a catch-22, not enough resources to make it worthwhile to go to it.

I hope they elevate the new unplanned un-built dorms over the new library.  I look forward to touring the library when it is finished.
