Since 1961 The Hotel Saranac has been owned and operated by Paul Smith's College, acting as a training ground for m and many other students in the Hotel Restaurant and Culinary Arts programs.
Back in the eighties, there were three dormitories near the Hotel Saranac, two houses and the old Trudeau Laboratory, which was converted into dorm rooms.

I lived in was once The Saranac Laboratory for the Study of Tuberculosis that was built in 1894 to replace E.L. Trudeau’s original lab, destroyed by fire caused by a defective incubator. I, with my roommate Ian, lived in the biggest of the rooms, likely the lab itself. Down below was the former library and then classroom space for the Hotel.
The building now appears to be in rough shape with broken windows and used by other folks, not known to me who. My room is on the left side on the second floor and has a pipe sticking out the window..
According to the placard near the front door, the building appears to be on the National Registry of Historic Landmarks. I hope it can be fixed up someday. This would make a great artisans space with some sweat and toil...
