Life was rough out there, in some places half the road was closed off for contestants. We got footage of someone who was pulled over for a 3 min biking penalty (and he wasn't happy). Anything for an exciting story..
12 noon - back to epicenter to film the transistion from Biking to Running
The bikes lay in waiting for their next jaunt onto the very narrow running course...that pink card on the windshield was as good as a "get out of jail free card". Which is good, for we were passing and going past police at high rates of speed. Nat said "Don't get used to this.."
But it is break time...we can go eat and watch the folks roll in..
Drink plenty of fluids, this means _everyone_ including Mike, Naomi
and Dave.
My drinking is not too far behind...
Coming in for a landing after 112 miles
Dismount and walk over the timing mats (some didn't, because they were so focused)
Run for food/ shoes
I can't describe in words the intensity of the event - me a few feet away from the contestants - piloting a starship in a controlled asteroid field is the closest thing I could compare it to! In some sections of the course, I had cars coming at me, bicycling on one side, runners coming at me, and with runners, trying to pass their fellow ironmen. I was weaving in and out of traffic, trying to keep up, keep pace, staying level and not wobbling at 5 mph - trying not to stall out the engine while going up hills - trying to make these insane corners at the end - twice - all with a cameraman on the back.
