I had a 1985 Honda Interceptor VF700F which I bought for $400 in June 1998 with only 23K on it!! (then I got my learners permit)
I'd have to say, getting a 700cc bike may not be the best choice to practice on.  But, I grew into it pretty quick.


(above) The bike on the manual cover is the model I had . Mine has a bit more scratches and bumps on it. Plus I put flame stickers  on my bike! (which I peeled off beofre I sold it)
(next photo) The bike (with more red than white) isn't mine, it's a 500cc model,  but it is darn near the same.

Most of the new sport tourers make you lean over too much, I was thinking I may go with a cruiser (if my Interceptor dies) like this 650cc V-Star Classic from Yamaha - it's (still in 2001) only $5900!! (I know...but most of the  BMW motorcycles are around $14,000 and many of the sport tourers are around $10,000).
