Date - long weekend of July 28th-31st, 2001
What for: - Volunteer you and your motorcycle (other positions too…)
for an Iron-man Triathlon competition.
Where: - Lake Placid NY, USA
A friend of mine Michael, some of you know from the New England tour on a Connie (hey, can't all be perfect), wants me to go and I thought I'd throw this out on the list…
Dave Steven bravely stepped forward
We kamped at the local KOA in a Kamping Kabin.
It was Okay, still next year a better place kould be found
The day before...
They need as many riders and bikes as possible to move around staff, officials, and media people. This year we had roughly 45 bikes. First up was our preride meeting and preride of the bicycle course, a 61 mile loop, which they run twice.
The field is empty but soon will be the heartbeat of the ironman. We were able to walk everywhere courtesy of our all access T-shirts. I even walked next to the finish line.
"First... this is not a "made for ESPN" event. They just, along with
many other media outlets, cover it. The organizers use bikes to move them
around just like is done in most big races like the Boston Marathon and
the Olympics. Most of these events are put on by local groups rounding
up lots of sponsors and volunteers. Even in the Adirondacks there is lots
of interest in this sort of thing and, therefore, lots of volunteers. More
are always welcome! The guy in charge of the bike (I think bicycle) brigade
also just finished working on the Olympic bobsled trials and will be doing
a local marathon in early July."
Looking up at the 1982 Olympic Skating arena, where, I think the USA Men won the gold in Hockey.
Not all came to the preride. This is where the ESPN cameramen were picking their steeds to ride on the back of. Mike, Dave and I were chosen for obvious reasons.
Time to sleep now - need to be at the course 6:30 a.m.
